Transitioning to Organic Seminar, Nov 29
Posted: Fri, November 18, 2016
Thinking about transitioning to organic production?
The demand for organic grain and organic milk has grown dramatically over the past 15 years. And it is expected to increase significantly over the next 15. In general, the cost versus income barrier is monumental, and prevents people from entering farming who wish to consider it. The superior profitability of organic milk and grain makes organic farming more affordable for the beginning farmer.
Our program, FarmStarts, will provide training for beginning farmers who have been in the business for less than 10 years. We will develop producers in the following areas:
• Organic Grain Operation Practices
• Organic Dairy Operation Practices
• Organic Dairy Markets and Marketing
• Organic Grain Markets and Marketing
• Ag Risk Management and Crop Insurance
• Transitioning to Organic
• Organic Certification
• Farm Financial Management
Conventional and organic producers are welcome. Several of the day’s educational sessions apply to both conventional and organic producers. Each person should register individually. Registration is free.
Funded in part by the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture’s Beginning Farmer and Rancher Development Program. It will be held at Heartland Acres in Independence. For details, go to: http://www.nfo.org/farmstarts/.
Travel stipends available for qualifying beginning farmers.
