Fruit Tree Pruning Program, March 29, Elgin
Posted: Mon, March 7, 2016
On Tuesday, March 29, Erling and Mary Bilden of Elgin will be hosting visitors at their orchard east of Elgin, where ISU Extension Horticulture Specialist Patrick O’Malley will discuss and then demonstrate proper pruning methods and fruit tree management. Annual training and pruning is essential to the production of high-quality apples and to maintain the health and longevity of trees, by allowing light throughout the tree canopy.
Pollinators also play an important role in our food chain and apples. Covering the role and practices to benefit pollinators will be discussed by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Program Educator Ron Lenth. The Bilden farm is located four miles east of Elgin on B64 (Agate Rd), and then ˝ mile north on Bixby Ave. (signs will be posted along the route). Registration will begin at 4:30 pm there and the program starts at 5pm. The $15 registration fee includes a light meal and program handouts. While not required, registering with the Fayette County ISU Extension office (563-425-3331) will aid in meal and material planning.
